Phylloxera early detection: Review of current methodologies
Abstract
A workshop was held to review the existing phylloxera early detection program. Attending were researchers, remote sensing specialists and industry representatives.
Summary
The Phylloxera and Grape Industry Board of South Australia currently uses remote sensing technologies as the basis for early detection. It involves imagery providing 1 metre resolution and identification of causes of low vigour vines through inspections.
Workshop participants raised interests in improving ground inspections to confirm reasons for a patch of weak vines in a vineyard and discussed the advantages of improved remote and on-ground methods.
It was decided to invest in additional research to enhance effectiveness of identification of phylloxera and in the meantime to maintain the current early detection program.
