The wine market next door

The Market in Focus - New Zealand report takes a closer look at our neighbours across the Tasman. Australian exports to New Zealand were valued at A$74 million in 2015, which is over 50 per cent of all imports. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is, not surprisingly, the most popular varietal in market, although Australia does well in red varietals. Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the top three imported Australian varietals and Australia has a large share of their sales in market.

Mexico – an emerging wine market

The Wine Australia Mexico Export Market Snapshot examines Australian exports to Mexico. In 2015, Australian exports to Mexico increased by 21 per cent in value to $810k and 4 per cent in volume to 191k litres. Nine out of 10 bottles are priced in the $2.50 to $4.99 per litre FOB segment. The report also reveals almost two-thirds of exports are Shiraz. Australia currently ranks 9th in total wine imports, with Spain and Chile well above the rest of the competition. According to Wine Intelligence, wine is a niche product, competing with traditional favourites beer and tequila.
