Hunter Valley Geographical Indication
The Australian Geographical Indication "Hunter Valley" was entered in the Register of Protected Names on 1 May 1996 in response to a direction received by the Registrar from the Presiding Member of the Geographical Indications Committee acting under Section 40Z of the WAC Act 1980.

GI textual description:
The Geographical Indication "Hunter Valley" is located within the State of New South Wales, Australia.The border is substantially delineated by the boundary of the Hunter Valley Catchment, an area managed by the Hunter Catchment Management Trust.
The beginning of the boundary is located at the north west corner of the Council of Merriwa at its junction with the north east corner of the Council of Coolah and thence proceeds generally east along the northern boundary of the Council of Merriwa to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Council of Scone and thence proceeds generally east along the northern boundary of the Council of Scone to the point where the Liverpool Range leaves the Council boundary as indicated by the boundary of the County of Brisbane (see map no. 9034-3-N), and thence following the boundary of the County of Brisbane generally in an east-north east direction (see map no. 9034-2-N) and continuing along this boundary which generally follows the line of the escarpment of the Liverpool Range to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Council of Murrurundi (see map no. 9034-1-S) and thence following in a generally east direction along the northern boundary of the Council of Murrurundi to its intersection with the boundary of the Council of Scone and thence generally east along the boundary of the Council of Scone (see map no. 9134-4-S) to the point where the boundary of the County of Brisbane leaves the boundary of the Council of Scone and thence following in a generally south east direction along this county boundary which follows the escarpment of the Mt. Royal Range to its point of intersection with the County of Durham (see map 9134-1-S) and thence along the boundary of the County of Durham and again generally following the escarpment of the Mt. Royal Range to the point of its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Council of Scone (see maps nos. 9134-2-N and 9134-2-S) and thence generally in a south and south west direction along the boundary of the Council of Scone to its intersection with the northern border with the Council of Dungog and thence generally south east and south along the eastern border of the Council of Dungog to its south east corner and thence in a generally south direction following the eastern boundary of the Parish of Wilmot (see map No. 9232-1-S) to its intersection with the Pacific Highway (National Highway "1") and thence following the Pacific Highway in a generally south west direction to the point where a straight line continuing the centre line of the main runway of RAAF Base Williamtown (see map no. 9232-2-N) intersects with the Pacific Highway just north of the town of Raymond Terrace (see map no. 9232-2-N and 9232-1-S) and thence following the extension of this straight line in a generally south east direction passing through RAAF Base Williamtown to its point of intersection with the Pacific Ocean and thence following the coast line in a generally south west direction along the boundary of the Council of Port Stephens to its intersection with the boundary of the City Council of Newcastle and thence following the coast line in a generally south west direction to the junction of the southern boundary of the City Council of Newcastle with the Pacific Ocean and thence generally north west along the southern boundary of the City Council of Newcastle to its intersection with the City Council of Cessnock and thence generally south west and thence north west along the south eastern boundary of the City Council of Cessnock to its intersection with the escarpment of the Hunter Range (see map no. 9131-4-N) at the point where the western boundary of the Parish of Blaxland leaves the southern boundary of the City Council of Cessnock and thence generally north west along the escarpment of the Hunter Range following the western boundary of the Parish of Blaxland to its intersection with the boundary of the Parish of Yango and thence generally north following the western boundary of the Parish of Yango to its intersection with the south eastern boundary of the Council of Singleton (see map no. 9132-3-S) and thence in a west direction along the boundary of the Council of Singleton to the point where the boundary of the Parish of Werong leaves the boundary of the Council of Singleton (see map no. 9032-2-S) and thence generally following the escarpment of the Hunter Range by following the boundary of the Parish of Werong in a north west direction to its intersection with the boundary of the Parish of Dalton (see map no. 9032-2-N) thence following the boundary of the Parish of Dalton to its intersection with the boundary of the Parish of Poppong and thence following the boundary of the Parish of Poppong to its intersection with the boundary of the Parish of Tonga (see map no. 9032-1-S) and thence following the boundary of the Parish of Tonga to its intersection with the boundary of the Council of Muswellbrook (see map no. 9032-4-S) and thence generally south west along the Boundary of the Council of Muswellbrook to its southern-most point and thence generally north along the western boundary of the Council of Muswellbrook to its junction with the Council of Merriwa and thence generally west and north along the southern and western boundaries of the Council of Merriwa to its intersection with the north eastern corner of the Council of Coolah which is the starting point.
The area so enclosed includes all of the City Council of Newcastle, City Council of Maitland, the Council of Dungog, the Council of Muswellbrook, the Council of Merriwa, and those parts of the Council of Scone lying to the south and west of the boundary defining the escarpment of the Mt. Royal Range, those parts of the Council of Murrurundi lying to the east of the boundary defining the escarpment of the Liverpool Range, those parts of the Council of Singleton lying to the north and east of the boundary defining the escarpment of the Hunter Range, those parts of the City Council of Cessnock lying to the north and east of the boundary defining the escarpment of the Hunter Range, and those parts of the Council of Port Stephens lying to the north and west of the defined boundary running from the south east corner of the Council of Dungog passing along the eastern boundary of the Parish of Wilmot, the Pacific Highway and the straight line running from the vicinity of Raymond Terrace through the cenreline of the main runway of the RAAF Williamtown Airfield to the eastern coastline of Australia as formed by the Pacific Ocean.
