The Australian Geographical Indication "Southern New South Wales" was entered in the Register of Protected Names on 1 May 1996 in response to a direction received by the Registrar from the Presiding Member of the Geographical Indications Committee acting under Section 40Z of the WAC Act 1980.

The Geographical Indication "Southern New South Wales" is located within the State of New South Wales, and also includes the Australian Capital Territory, Australia.
The beginning point of the boundary is located at the intersection of the north eastern boundary of the Council of Temora and the north western boundary of the Council of Young, and thence proceeds in a generally east direction along the northern boundary of the Council of Young to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Council of Boorowa, and thence in a generally north east direction along the northern boundary of the Council of Boorowa to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Council of Crookwell, and thence in a generally east and thence south east direction along the northern border of the Council of Crookwell to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Council of Mulwaree, and thence in a generally east direction along the northern border of the Council of Mulwaree to the eastern boundary of the Council of Mulwaree, and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the Council of Mulwaree to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Council of Tallaganda, and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the Council of Tallaganda to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Council of Cooma Monaro, and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the Council of Cooma Monaro to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Council of Bombala, and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the Council of Bombala to its intersection with the Victoria/New South Wales border as formed by the southern boundary of the Council of Bombala, and thence in a generally north west direction along the southern boundary of the Council of Bombala as formed by the Victoria / New South Wales border to its intersection with the southern boundary of the Council of Snowy River as formed by the Victoria / New South Wales border, and thence generally north west along the southern boundary of the Council of Snowy River to its intersection with the southern boundary of the Council of Tumbarumba as formed by the Victoria / New South Wales border, and thence generally north west along the southern boundary of the Council of Tumbarumba as formed by the Victoria / New South Wales border to its intersection with the western boundary of the Council of Tumbarumba at a point adjacent to the township of Jinjelic, and thence in a generally north direction along the western boundary of the Council of Tumbarumba to its intersection with the western boundary of the Council of Tumut, and thence generally north along the western boundary of the Council of Tumut to its intersection with the western boundary of the Council of Gundagai, and thence generally north west and thence north east along the western boundary of the Council of Gundagai to its intersection with the western boundary of Council of Harden, and thence generally north along the western boundary of the Council of Harden to its intersection with the south boundary of the Council of Young, thence generally west thence north west along the north west boundary of the Council of Young to the beginning point.
The area so enclosed includes all of the Council of Bombala, the Council of Boorowa, the Council of Cooma Monaro, the Council of Crookwell, the City Council of Goulburn, the Council of Gundagai, the Council of Gunning, the Council of Harden, the Council of Mulwaree, the City Council of Queanbeyan, the Council of Snowy River, the Council of Tumbarumba, the Council of Tallaganda, the Council of Tumut, both the eastern and western parts of the Council of Yarrowlumla, the Council of Yass, the Council of Young, and all the Cities, Towns, Councils and Municipalities within the borders of the Australian Capital Territory.
