The Australian Geographical Indication "Rutherglen" was entered in the Register of Protected Names on 2 September 1997 in response to a direction received by the Registrar from the Presiding Member of the Geographical Indications Committee acting under Section 40Z of the WAC Act 1980.

The Geographical Indication "Rutherglen" is located within the zone North East Victoria within the State of Victoria, Australia.
The beginning point of the boundary is the north west corner of the geographical indication "Rutherglen" which is defined as the junction of the Ovens River and the Murray River and is located at grid reference DA260113 (Wangaratta, sheet 8125), and proceeds generally east along the south bank of the Murray River (Victorian/New South Wales State border) to edge of map Wangaratta at grid reference DA457158; on to map Buraja (sheet 8126) at grid reference DA457158 and proceeds along the south bank of the Murray River to edge of map at grid reference DA548204 on to map Walbundrie (sheet 8226), at grid reference DA548204 and proceeds along the south bank of the Murray River to edge of map at grid reference DA657160 on to map Albury (sheet 8225), at grid reference DA657160 and proceeds along the south bank of the Murray River to edge of map at grid reference DA660160 on to map Walbundrie (sheet 8226), at grid reference DA660160 and proceeds along the south bank of the Murray River to edge of map at grid reference DA662160 on to map Albury (sheet 8225), at grid reference DA662160 and proceeds along the south bank of the Murray River to grid reference DA818088 and thence south along grid line 818 to its junction with the Hume Highway at grid reference DA818066 thence generally west along the Hume Highway to grid reference DA759069 where it turns south along grid line 759 to Mount Lady Franklin at grid reference DA759040 and proceeds south east in a straight line to grid reference DA803017, thence south south-east in a straight line to its intersection with the Beechworth-Wodonga Road at grid reference DV838885 thence proceed south west along the Beechworth-Wodonga Road to grid reference DV826864 thence proceeds north west in a straight line until it reaches the junction of three tracks at grid reference DV776899 thence west on grid line 899 to the junction of two unnamed roads near Mt Barambogie at grid reference DV615899 thence in a straight line to the edge of map at grid reference DV550942 on to map Wangaratta (sheet 8125) at grid reference DV550943 and proceed to the intersection with the Hume Highway at grid reference DV529959 and continuing south west to grid reference DV525956 and then west to the Springhurst-Rutherglen Road at grid reference DV515959 then north along the Springhurst-Rutherglen Road until its intersection with Boundary Road at grid reference DV517975 thence generally west along Boundary Road until its junction with West Boundary Road at grid reference DV356999 thence generally north along West Boundary Road to meet the Murray Valley Highway at grid reference DA365068 where it turns west and follows the Murray Valley Highway to the bridge over the Ovens River at grid reference DA280080 where it turns north following the Ovens River to its confluence with the Murray River at the starting point grid reference DA260113.
