North West Victoria Geographical Indication

The Australian Geographical Indication "North West Victoria" was entered in the Register of Protected Names on 1 May 1996 in response to a direction received by the Registrar from the Presiding Member of the Geographical Indications Committee acting under Section 40Z of the WAC Act 1980.

GI textual description:

The Geographical Indication "North West Victoria" is located within the State of Victoria, Australia.

The beginning point of the boundary is located at the intersection of the Victoria / South Australia border and the north west corner of the boundary of the Shire of Mildura as formed by the Murray River, and thence proceeds in a generally east and then south east direction along the Murray River which forms the Victoria / New South Wales border to its intersection with the northern boundary of the City of Mildura, and thence generally east along the northern boundary of the City of Mildura to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Shire of Mildura, and thence generally south east along the northern boundary of the Shire of Mildura to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Shire of Swan Hill, and thence generally east, and thence generally north, and thence generally east, and thence generally south east along the northern boundary of the Shire of Swan Hill to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the City of Swan Hill, and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the City of Swan Hill to its intersection with the north east boundary of the Shire of Swan Hill, and thence generally south east along the north east boundary of the Shire of Swan Hill to its intersection with the north east boundary of the Shire of Kerang, and thence generally south east along the north east boundary of the Shire of Kerang to its intersection with the north east boundary of the Shire of Cohuna, and thence generally south east along the north east boundary of the Shire of Cohuna to its intersection with the south boundary of the Shire of Cohuna, and thence in a generally west direction along the south boundary of the Shire of Cohuna to its intersection with the east boundary of the Shire of Kerang, and thence in a generally south and thence generally west direction along the south boundary of the Shire of Kerang to its intersection with the north boundary of the Shire of Charlton, and thence initially in a generally east direction along this boundary and thence in a generally south direction along the east boundary of the Shire of Charlton, and thence in a generally west, north west and thence generally west direction along the southern boundary of the Shire of Charlton to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Shire of Donald, and thence generally west along the southern boundary of the Shire of Donald to its intersection with the east boundary of the Shire of Dunmunkle, and thence in a generally south west direction along the east boundary of the Shire of Dunmunkle, and thence in a generally west direction along the southern boundary of the Shire of Dunmunkle, and thence in a generally north direction along the western boundary of the Shire of Dunmunkle to its intersection with the road identified as the Wimmera Highway linking the townships of Murtoa, Dooen and Horsham, and thence in a generally south west direction along this road to its intersection with the northern boundary of the City of Horsham, and thence generally west along the northern boundary of the City of Horsham, and thence generally south along the western boundary of the City of Horsham to its intersection with the road identified as the Wimmera Highway, and thence in a generally west direction along this road to the township of Natimuk, and thence generally west along the road branching at that point from the Wimmera Highway and passing through the townships of Gymbowen, Goroke, and passing to the south of the Booroopki Swamp and thence through the Township of Neuarpur to the intersection of this road with the Victoria / South Australia border to the east of the township of Frances (South Australia), and thence in a generally north direction along the Victoria / South Australia border to the beginning point.

The area so enclosed includes all of the Shire of Birchip, the Shire of Charlton, the Shire of Cohuna, the Shire of Dimboola, the Shire of Donald, the Shire of Dunmunkle, the Shire of Kaniva, the Shire of Karkarooc, the Shire of Kerang, the Shire of Lowan, the Shire of Mildura, the Shire of Swan Hill, the Shire of Walpeup, the Shire of Warracknabeal, the Shire of Wycheproof and those parts of the Shire of Kowree lying to the north of the Frances (South Australia) to Natimuk (Victoria) road passing to the south of the Booroopki Swamp, those parts of the Shire of Arapiles lying to the north of the Frances (South Australia) to Natimuk (Victoria) road and the road identified as the Wimmera Highway between Natimuk (Victoria) and the western boundary of the Shire of Wimmera, and those parts of the Shire of Wimmera lying to the north of the boundary as defined by the Natimuk to Horsham section of the Wimmera Highway to its intersection with the west boundary of the City of Horsham, and thence generally north along the west boundary of the City of Horsham, and thence generally east along the north boundary of the City of Horsham to its intersection with the road identifies as the Wimmera Highway linking the townships of Horsham, Dooen and Murtoa, and thence generally north east along this road to the intersection of this road with the east boundary of the Shire of Wimmera.

The area so described also includes the City of Mildura, the City of Swan Hill and the Borough of Kerang.
