The Australian Geographical Indication "Northern Rivers" was entered in the Register of Protected Names on 1 May 1996 in response to a direction received by the Registrar from the Presiding Member of the Geographical Indications Committee acting under Section 40Z of the WAC Act 1980.

GI textual description:
The Geographical Indication "Northern Rivers" is located within the State of New South Wales, Australia.
The beginning point of the boundary is located at the intersection of the Queensland/New South Wales border with the north western boundary of the Council of Kyogle, and proceeds in a generally easterly direction along the Queensland / New South Wales border as formed by the northern boundary of the Council of Kyogle to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Council of Tweed, and thence generally east along the Queensland / New South Wales border as formed by the northern boundary of the Council of Tweed to its intersection with the eastern coastline of Australian as formed by the Pacific Ocean, and thence in a southerly direction along this coastline passing along the eastern boundaries of the Council of Tweed, the Council of Byron, the Council of Ballina, the Council of Richmond River, the Council of Maclean, the Council of Ulmarra, the City Council of Coffs Harbour, the Council of Bellingen, the Council of Nambucca, the Council of Kempsey, the Council of Hastings, the City Council of Greater Taree, the Council of Great Lakes, and the Council of Port Stephens to a point on the Pacific Coast, where the straight line continuing the centre line of the runway of the RAAF Base Williamtown (see map No. 9232-2-N) meets the Pacific Ocean and thence following this line back to where it meets the Pacific Highway just north of Raymond Terrace (see map no. 9232-1-S) and thence north easterly along the National Highway "1", (the Pacific Highway) to a point where it meets the western boundary of the Parish of Tarean, and thence generally northe to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Council of Port Stephens and thence north along the boundary of the Council of Port Stephens to its intersection, with the western boundary of the Council of Great Lakes, thence in a generally north and thence northwesterly direction along this boundary to the southern boundary of the Council of Gloucester, andthence generally west along the southern boundary of the Council of Gloucester, and thence generally northwards along the western boundary of the Council of Gloucester to the point of its intersection with the escarpment of the Mt. Royal Range (see map no. 9134-2-S), at the point where the boundary of the County of Hawes leaves the boundary of the Council of Gloucester and thence following the boundary of the County of Hawes generally north and thence north west and thence west along the escarpment of the Mt. Royal Range to the point of its intersection with north western boundary of the Council of Scone (see maps nos. 9134-2-N, 9134-1-S and 9134-4-S), and thence generally north east along the northern boundary of the Council of Scone to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Council of Gloucester, and thence generally east along the northern boundary of the Council of Gloucester to its intersection with the north western boundary of the City Council of Greater Taree, and thence generally north east along the north western boundary of the City Council of Greater Taree to its intersection with the western boundary of the Council of Hastings, and thence generally north along the western boundaries of the Council of Hastings to its intersection with the western boundary of the Council of Kempsey, and thence generally north along the western boundary of the Council of Kempsey to its intersection with the western boundary of the Council of Nambucca, and thence generally north along the western boundary of the Council of Nambucca to its intersection with the western boundary of the Council of Bellingen, and thence generally north along the western boundary of the Council of Bellingen to its intersection with the western boundary of the Council of Nymboida, and thence generally north along the western boundary of the Council of Nymboida to its intersection with the southern boundary of the Council of Copmanhurst, and thence generally west to the western boundary of the Council of Copmanhurst, and thence generally north along the western boundary of the Council of Copmanhurst to its intersection with the western boundary of the Council of Kyogle, and thence generally north along the western boundary of the Council of Kyogle to the beginning point.
The area so enclosed includes all of the Council of Ballina, the Council of Bellingen, the Council of Byron, the Council of Casino, the City Council of Coffs Harbour, the Council of Copmanhurst, the Council of Gloucester, the City Council of Grafton, the Council of Great Lakes, the City Council of Greater Taree, the Council of Hastings, the Council of Kempsey, the Council of Kyogle, the City Council of Lismore, the Council of Maclean, the Council of Nambucca, the Council of Nymboida, the Council of Richmond River, the Council of Tweed, the Council of Ulmarra, and those parts of the Council of Port Stephens lying to the east of the boundary defining the Hunter Valley catchment and to the east of the National Highway "1", and lying to the north and east of the boundary defined by the straight line joining the Pacific Ocean and National Highway "1" passing through the RAAF Base Williamtown, and those parts of the Council of Scone lying to the east and north of the boundary defining the escarpment of the Mt. Royal Range.
