Margaret River Geographical Indication

The Australian Geographical Indication "Margaret River" was entered in the Register of Protected Names on 30 October 1996 in response to a direction received by the Registrar from the Presiding Member of the Geographical Indications Committee acting under Section 40Z of the WAC Act 1980.

GI textual description:

The Geographical Indication namely the region Margaret River is located within the Geographical Indication "South West Australia" within the State of Western Australia.

The beginning point is located at the junction of the line of longitude 115 18E where it intersects the southern coast at the Southern Ocean, thence following the coast in a mainly western direction, then a mainly northern direction and finally in a mainly eastern direction to the point at which the coast intersects the said line of longitude, 115 18E at the Indian Ocean, thence southwards along this line of longitude to the intersection with the beginning point at its intersection with the coast at the Southern Ocean.

The area so enclosed includes the sections of the Shires of Busselton and Augusta Margaret River which lie to the west of the line of longitude 115 18E.

The area so enclosed also includes the towns of Dunsborough, Yallingup, Cowaramup, Margaret River and Augusta.
