Q
What are the main issues that grape and wine producers are trying to solve with technology?
A

Australian grapegrowers and wine producers are challenged with many of the same problems faced broadly in agriculture and a few of their own unique challenges.

Climate change has forced many growers to rethink how best to grow wine grapes according to new climatic conditions or with different and unfamiliar varieties – all of these crops require monitoring to ensure they are healthy and yield as expected. Water management will always be front-of-mind for Australian farmers, and grapegrowers are always looking for new ways to manage water and apply the right amount to optimise yields.

Work forces are very different, especially since the pandemic, so workforce management and optimisation tools assist growers in ensuring safe and productive workplaces for employees, while managing the ever-present biosecurity threats in agriculture. Tools and that also improve processes leading to improved profitability are also a key area of interest for the sector.

There are a multitude of challenges that AgTech solutions are targeted toward to help growers grow more profitable and sustainable crops.

Q
What size is the grape and wine sector in Australia?
A

The Australian grape and wine sector spans 65 unique winemaking regions with more than 146,000 hectares of winegrapes that produce approximately 1.2 billion litres of wine annually.

There are more than 2400 wineries and more than 6200 grapegrowers, but the sector also expands to other direct and in-direct roles including tourism and retail. In 2019, an AgEcon Plus report for Wine Australia reported the sector – across grapegrowers, winemakers and wine tourism operators – contributes $45.5 billion to the Australian economy and supports 163,790 direct and in-direct full- and part-time jobs.
