Australian wine took centre stage in Shanghai on 13–15 November 2018 with a record-breaking presence at ProWine China, the leading international trade fair for wine and spirits, at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre.

Wine Australia’s largest-ever pavilion showcased Australia’s booming wine sector in our biggest export market by value – with the support of the Australian Government’s $50 million Export and Regional Wine Support Package (the $50m Package).

A record 47 exhibitors showcased 90 wine brands – compared to 40 brands in 2017 – from more than 20 wine regions across Australia, including Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley, Beechworth, Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Eden Valley, Geographe, Great Southern, Henty, Hunter Valley, Langhorne Creek, Margaret River, McLaren Vale, Mornington Peninsula, Mount Benson, Murray Darling, Nagambie Lakes, Orange, Perth Hills, Pyrenees, Rutherglen, Tasmania, Upper Goulburn and Yarra Valley.

Between the 47 exhibitors, 6 in-pavilion tastings, 2 master classes and a seminar on cutting-edge wine business technology, the ‘Australian Wine Made Our Way’ themed pavilion was bustling with activity.

In-pavilion tasting classes explored:

  • the ‘next wave’ of Shiraz from Victoria – including Heathcote, Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Beechworth, Rutherglen, Grampians and Pyrenees
  • Margaret River’s emergence as a world-class region for exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon
  • alternative varieties – exploring the diversity of McLaren Vale wines
  • a tasting journey exploring the Barossa’s diverse palette of varieties, flavours and textures
  • a tribute to New South Wales’ Riverina Durif as ‘the best unknown red wine in Australia’, and
  • a ‘world of unique elegance’ unveiled by Victorian Pinot Noir.

The public master classes showcased rare and distinguished Barossa varieties, blends, estates, single vineyards and flagship releases; and the history and tradition of premium McLaren Vale Shiraz, along with ‘New Age’ trendsetters.

We would like to invite you to embark on an incredible journey with us tasting some of the top Shiraz from Victoria, Australia in this special Wine Australia Masterclass.

Shiraz, arguably the most iconic and most loved Australian wine variety in the world, is also known as Syrah in France. It has also become one of the most understood red wines among all imported wine in China. In hot climates such as Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale in Australia, Shiraz is more consistently fullbodied with softer tannin, jammier fruit and spice notes.

The diversity of these Shiraz is reflected in both their wine styles and regions. From highly-rated and sought-after Heathcote in Central Victoria, to cooler regions such as Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsular, Beechworth, Rutherglen, Grampians and Pyrenees, Victorian Shiraz will surely surprise you with its exceptional quality and elegance.

Riverina Durif - the best unknown red wine in Australia

Presented by
James Dai 戴效群

滨海沿岸杜瑞夫 - 鲜为人知的“澳”世佳酿

In outback Australia, there is a wine region which has plenty of sunshine and great vineyard practices to grow and produce a unique red wine. The Riverina in outback New South Wales, which is home to 7 of Australia's top 20 wine successful companies, have been making a red wine that outweighs both Australian Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon in terms of being full bodied yet of very smooth flavour. It is called Durif. Originating from France where two grape varieties cross pollinated back in the 1860's the varietal has almost disappeared from Europe. Luckily, the vines were planted in Australia and flourished. The Riverina grows and crushes the most Durif in all of Australia giving them the ability to produce quality Durif for all to enjoy. Durif is best matched to red meat dishes such as premium Wagyu rump. Discover the best kept secret in Australian red wine!

A world of unique elegance - Discover Victorian Pinot Noir

Presented by
Corinne Mui 梅康妮

独特优雅的维多利亚黑比诺

Come and join us for a unique opportunity to taste some of Victoria’s best Pinot Noir. Experience the unique elegance and diverse styles that these wines exemplify, in an exclusive Wine Australia Masterclass.

Pinot noir grapes are grown around the world, mostly in the cooler climates. The grape is chiefly associated with Burgundy in France. When young, it tends to have fruity red aromas of cherries, raspberries and strawberries. As the wine ages, it has the potential to develop delicate vegetal, coffee, chocolate and more complex tastes.

Victoria, as Australia’s premium Pinot Noir HQ, has recently seen a significant market trend of Pinot Noir drinking in the country, with this variety attracting every discernible palette.

From Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula, to the lesser known Grampians, the state of Victoria has the perfect condition for Australian Pinot Noir winegrowers and winemakers to produce premium wine. It is Victoria where the true characteristics of New World Pinot Noir are fully experimented and expressed.

This class is designed for Australian wine enthusiasts, sommeliers, trade professionals and Pinot Noir lovers. Limited seats only.
