A new report from the UK
The Wine and Spirit Trade Association (UK) has put out its inaugural wine report for 2016, which brings together multiple sources of data to provide you with an overview of the UK market. The insights include:
- the UK collects 67 per cent of all wine duty in the EU and has the second highest wine duty overall.
- taxes on wine in the UK have increased by 56 per cent since 2008.
- Merlot is the most popular red wine while Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio are tied for first in whites.
- price per litre in the on-trade has increased by 4 per cent, while off-trade has been stable.
- Australia is number 1 in the off trade, but third in the on-trade, behind France and Italy.

Euromonitor International has identified its top trends for alcoholic beverages in 2016. These include technologies re-shaping the way products are made and marketed, the Millennial generation driving consumption and ‘craft fatigue’.
