Women currently or previously employed in wine and grape industry occupations over the past 10 years are being invited to take part in a Wine Australia-funded study aimed at gaining deeper insights into the challenges and opportunities related to gender equality, diversity, and inclusion within the Australian wine sector.
The study delivers on Wine Australia’s commitments in the One Grape & Wine Sector Plan released in August to improve diversity and inclusion in the sector and in leadership and attract and retain skilled workers.
Expressions of interest to be involved in the study should be received by the research team from Charles Sturt University and University of New South Wales by no later than 31 October 2024.

The future success of Australia’s wine sector is closely tied to the sector’s ability to support its people. Gender equality is a key factor in ensuring the industry can attract and retain talent, and has been identified as an area of focus in the recently released One Grape & Wine Sector Plan by Wine Australia and Australian Grape & Wine.
Our research team is undertaking a study to better understand the present challenges and opportunities in terms of achieving gender equality, diversity and inclusion in the Australian wine sector. This study will be conducted independently by Charles Sturt University and the University of New South Wales. It is led by Charles Sturt University. The project is funded by Wine Australia.
The aim of the research is to lay a solid foundation for informed decision-making that advances the sector’s gender equality goals, and to establish a platform for sharing practical strategies, resources, and success stories.
In this phase of the research, we are interested in speaking with women previously and currently employed in wine and grape industry occupations, including occupations specific to wine making, wine growing, viticulture and retail and marketing positions within wineries. We are also interested to speak with women in associated industry roles, ownership roles and governing body executive roles.
Participants will work or have worked with the professions or occupations listed above within the past 10 years.
The next phase of this study will broaden the stakeholder base to ensure a wide reflection of views are gathered beyond those of women participating in the focus groups.
Interested participants please note that the scope of this study does not include women involved in roles outside of winery related positions, such as wine tourism.
Participants will be invited to participate in a 60-minute online focus group. The focus group will be conducted at a time and date that is most suitable for a majority of those who can participate.
