The Australian Geographical Indication "Northern Slopes" was entered in the Register of Protected Names on 1 May 1996 in response to a direction received by the Registrar from the Presiding Member of the Geographical Indications Committee acting under Section 40Z of the WAC Act 1980.

GI textual description:
The Geographical Indication "Northern Slopes" is located within the State of New South Wales, Australia.
The beginning point of the boundary is located at the point of intersection of the Queensland/New South Wales border with the National Highway identified as Newell Highway, Highway "39" to the south east of the town of Goondiwindi (Qld), and thence proceeds in a generally easterly direction along the Queensland/New South Wales border forming a part of the northern boundary of the Council of Moree Plains to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Council of Inverell, and thence generally east along the northern boundary of the Council of Inverell to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Council of Tenterfield, and thence generally east along the northern boundary of the Council of Tenterfield and thence generally southwards along the eastern boundary of the Council of Tenterfield to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Council of Severn, and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the Council of Severn to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Council of Guyra, and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the Council of Guyra to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Council of Dumaresq, and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the Council of Dumaresq to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the Council of Walcha, and thence generally south along the eastern boundary of the Council of Walcha, and thence generally west along the southern boundary of the Council of Walcha to its intersection with the southern boundary of the Council of Nundle, and thence generally west along the southern boundary of the Council of Nundle to its intersection with the south east boundary of the Council of Quirindi, and thence generally westerly along the south eastern boundary of the Council of Quirindi to the point of its intersection with the eastern boundary of the County of Buckland which generally follows the escarpment of the Liverpool Range (see map no. 9034-1-S) and thence following the eastern boundary of the County of Buckland in a generally south west direction generally following the escarpment of the Liverpool Range (see map no. 9034-2-N) and thence generally south west and thence generally south to the point where the boundary of the County of Buckland intersects the southern boundary of the Council of Murrurundi (see map no.9034-3-N) and thence in a generally west and thence north west direction (following the escarpment of the Liverpool Range) along the southern boundary of the Council of Murrurundi, to its intersection with southern boundary of Council of Quirindi, and briefly following the southern boundary of the Council of Quirindi until the point of its intersection with the north eastern boundary of the Council of Coolah, and thence in a generally south west direction along the eastern boundary of the Council of Coolah, thence in a generally west direction, thence generally south, thence generally west, thence generally north, thence generally west again following the southern boundary of the Council of Coolah until the point of its intersection with the western boundary of the Council of Coolah, and thence generally north along the western boundary of the Council of Coolah to its intersection with the southern boundary of the Council of Gilgandra, and thence generally west along the southern boundary of the Council of Gilgandra to its intersection with the National Highway "39", and thence in a generally northerly direction along Highway "39" to the township of Gilgandra, and thence in a generally northeast direction along this highway passing through the towns of Coonabarabran, Narrabri and Moree to the beginning point on the Queensland/NSW border.
The area so enclosed includes all of the the City Council of Armidale, the Council of Barraba, the Council of Bingara, the Council of Coolah, the Council of Dumaresq, the Council of Glen Innes, the Council of Gunnedah, the Council of Guyra, the Council of Inverell, the Council of Manilla, the Council of Nundle, the Council of Parry, the Council of Quirindi, the Council of Severn, the City Council of Tamworth, the Council of Tenterfield, the Council of Uralla, the Council of Walcha, the Council of Yallaroi, and those parts of the Council of Coonabarabran, the Council of Gilgandra, the Council of Moree Plains and the Council of Narrabri lying to the east of the border as defined by Highway "39" and those parts of the Council of Murrurundi lying to the north and west of the boundary describing the Liverpool Range escarpment.
