The Australian Geographical Indication "Murray Darling" was entered in the Register of Protected Names on 16 June 1997 in response to a direction received by the Registrar from the Presiding Member of the Geographical Indications Committee acting under Section 40Z of the WAC Act 1980.

GI textual description:
The Geographical Indication "Murray Darling" is located partly within the zone North West Victoria within the State of Victoria; and partly within the zone Big Rivers within the State of New South Wales, Australia.
The beginning point of the boundary is the north west corner of the geographical indication "Murray Darling" which is defined by a point on the South Australia/New South Wales border, reference WH001500 (Map SI 54-7): thence proceed easterly along the grid line 500, passing through the town of Regunyah, reference WH160500; and continue east along grid line 500 to reference WH600500, then turn north onto grid line 600 and proceed north along the grid line to reference WJ600060; turn east and proceed along grid line 060 to edge of map at XJ390060. (Map SI 54-8) at reference XJ390060 and continue east along grid line 060 to reference XJ500060, turn south and follow grid line 500 to edge of map at XH500360. (Map SI 54-12) continue south along grid line 500 to reference XH500000, turn east along grid line 000 to the edge of the map at reference YH760000; thence proceed generally south in a straight line until the intersection of the Hay-Balranald road, reference YG750550 (Map SI 54-12); thence follow this road in a south westerly direction thence generally west to the intersection of the road to Perekerten, reference YG630530; thence follow in a generally southerly direction the road towards the township of Perekerten, reference YG595315; continue in a south westerly direction in a straight line to the intersection with the Kyalite road, reference YG475235; thence follow the road in a westerly direction to the township of Kyalite, on the Wakool River, reference YG270290; thence follow the Wakool River in a north westerly direction to the intersection of the rivers Murray and Wakool at YG145400; thence westerly along the road to Haysdale, reference YG070370; thence westerly along the road to Kooloonong railway station, reference XG960380; thence westerly along the railway line to the road at XG950390 thence generally westerly along the road to its junction with the Manangatang to Robinvale road at XG680415, then follow the road to Annuello, reference XG670420; thence proceed west on the 420 grid line to the edge of the map at XG3654250. (Map SI 54-11) at XG375420 continue on grid line 420 in a westerly direction to WG920420 on One Tree Plain, then turn in a northerly direction along line of longitude 142°E and proceed to its intersection with the road from Carwarp to Taplin at WG930820; and then proceed west along the Carwarp to Taplin road to the edge of the map at grid reference WG000775 (Map SI 54-11); thence northerly along the grid line 000 to the Murray River at WH000350, then east along the Murray River to reference WH001350, and continue north along grid line 001 to the edge of the map, reference WH001380.
