The Australian Geographical Indication "Lower Murray" was entered in the Register of Protected Names on 7 December 1996 in response to a direction received by the Registrar from the Presiding Member of the Geographical Indications Committee acting under Section 40Z of the WAC Act 1980.

GI textual description:
The Geographical Indication "Lower Murray" is located within the State of South Australia, Australia.
The beginning point of the boundary is located at the intersection of the eastern boundary of the District Council of Hallett with the northern boundary of the County of Burra adjacent to the property identified on the map as "Willara" and proceeds thence in a generally east direction along the northern boundary of the County of Burra to its intersection with the northern boundary of the County of Young, and thence in a generally east direction along the northern boundary of the County of Young to its intersection with the northern boundary of the County of Hamley, and thence in a generally east direction along the northern boundary of the County of Hamley to its intersection with the South Australia / New South Wales border, and thence in a generally south direction along the South Australia / New South Wales border to its intersection with the South Australia / Victoria border as formed by the Murray River adjacent to Lock No. 6, and thence in a generally north west direction along the South Australia / Victoria border as formed by the Murray River to its north west corner, and thence in a generally south direction along the South Australia / Victoria border to its intersection with the southern boundary of the County of Chandos adjacent to Mt. Shaugh, and thence in a generally west direction along the southern boundary of the County of Chandos to its intersection with the southern boundary of the County of Buccleuch, and thence in a generally west direction along the southern boundary of the County of Buccleuch to its intersection with the southern boundary of the County of Russell, and thence in a generally west direction along the southern boundary of the County of Russell to its intersection with the coastline of South Australia as formed by the Southern Ocean at a point south of Lake Albert, and thence in a generally north west direction along the South Australian coastline to its intersection with the north west boundary of the District Council of Meningie and thence in a generally north east direction along the north west boundary of the District Council of Meningie to its intersection with the western boundary of the Hundred of Brinkley, and thence in a generally north direction along the western boundary of the Hundred of Brinkley to its intersection with the western boundary of the Hundred of Mobilong, and thence in a generally north direction along the western boundary of the Hundred of Mobilong to its intersection with the western boundary of the Hundred of Finniss, and thence in a generally north direction along the western boundary of the Hundred of Finniss to its intersection with the western boundary of the Hundred of Angas, and thence generally north along the western boundary of the Hundred of Angas to its intersection with the northern boundary of the Hundred of Angas, and thence generally east along the northern boundary of the Hundred of Angas to its intersection with the western boundary of the Hundred of Bagot, and thence generally north along the western boundary of the Hundred of Bagot to its intersection with the western boundary of the Hundred of Anna, and thence generally north along the western boundary of the Hundred of Anna to its intersection with the northern boundary of the District Council of Ridley-Truro, and thence generally east along the northern boundary of the District Council of Ridley-Truro to its intersection with the western boundary of the District Council of Morgan, and thence in a generally north direction along the western boundary of the District Council of Morgan to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the District Council of Burra Burra, and thence in a generally north direction along the eastern boundary of the District Council of Burra Burra to its intersection with the eastern boundary of the District Council of Hallett, and thence in a generally north direction along the eastern boundary of the District Council of Hallett to its intersection with the northern boundary of the County of Burra, the beginning point.
The area so enclosed includes all of the District Council of Barmera, the District Council of Berri, the District Council of Brown's Well, the District Council of Karoonda East Murray, the District Council of Lameroo, the District Council of Loxton, the District Council of Mannum, the District Council of Morgan, the District Council of Paringa, the District Council of Peake, the District Council of Pinnaroo, the District Council of Waikere, and those parts of the District Council of Coonalpyn Downs lying to the north of the described boundary, those parts of the District Council of Meningie lying to the north of the described boundary, those parts of the District Council of Murray Bridge lying to the east of the described boundary, those parts of the District Council of Ridley-Truro lying to the east of the described boundary, those parts of the District Council of Tatiara lying to the north of the described boundary, all of the County of Hamley, all of the County Young, those parts of the County of Burra lying to the east of the described boundary, and the Corporate Town of Renmark, and all other lands lying within the described boundary.
