China Awards Judges 2020
To select the winner for each award category based on the principle of justice, fairness and openness, Wine Australia invited a group of key partners and opinion leaders of the China Australia wine sector to be the judges of this year's China Awards.
This year, Wine Australia hosted an online judging day for the judges to discuss the candidates and select those winners who have made outstanding contributions to the growth, demand and sales of Australian wine in China. Six judges are confirmed, including two Masters of Wine, a Master Sommelier, key opinion leaders and wine educators.
Judges
Liu Bing
Liu Bing commenced her posting as Deputy Consul-General and Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner at the Australian Consulate-General in Shanghai in January 2019.
Prior to this role, Bing worked as Senior China Adviser, Acting General Manager – Asia, Acting Executive Director – International Markets and Asia Lead – Global Markets based in Austrade’s Sydney office.
Bing started working with Austrade in 2001, the most recent role offshore was the Acting Senior Trade Commissioner/Deputy Consul General at the Australian Consulate General Shanghai. While in Shanghai, Bing managed the Austrade East China network of offices by providing business opportunities and services for Australian entities in trade, education and inward investment.
Andrew Caillard MW
Andrew Caillard MW is a graduate of Roseworthy Agricultural College and a Master of Wine (winning the prestigious Madame Bollinger Medal for excellence in wine tasting). As the co-founder of Langton's, Andrew has been a key figure in shaping Australia’s fine wine agenda for over 30 years.
Andrew’s primary role is Fine Wine Principal of Endeavour Drinks, a division of Australia’s largest retailer Woolworths and owner of Dan Murphy’s, BWS, Cellarmasters, Langton’s, Pinnacle Drinks and China’s Summergate. In this role, he works as an expert advisor, wine expert and ambassador.
Andrew is a columnist and tasting panellist for Australia’s Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine. Andrew also chairs Shanghai’s Wine 100 competition, judges at the Japan Wine Challenge and participates in the Adelaide Wine Show’s provenance prize.
Andrew has also authored several books and produced documentaries, making him well versed in all aspects of the Australian wine world.
Lu Yang MS
Lu Yang is the first, and currently the only, Chinese Master Sommelier in the world, as well as the most influential sommelier in Greater China. He is the Corporate Wine Consultant for Shangri-La Hotel Group, and also consults for multiple Black Diamond and Michelin Star restaurants. But his influence on the wine industry extends far beyond the hospitality industry.
Yang founded Grapea & Co, the foremost wine education and service institute in China. He is the Chief Wine Editor for Food&Wine (Chinese version), and writes for decanterchina.com.
Yang is the co-chair for International Wine Challenge China, the top wine competition in China. He is the exclusive Wine Ambassador for Hainan Airline, in charge of wine selection for this highest rated Chinese airline.
Yang is a committee member of Black Diamond, the most powerful restaurant guide in China. He also collaborates with different lifestyle and luxury brands to promote wine culture in China. For his contribution to many aspects of the wine industry, Yang is regarded as one of the most influential wine personalities in Asia, and has been awarded with many recognitions, most recently “2018 Man of the Year” by the DrinkBusiness.
Corinne Mui
Corinne Mui is an award-winning wine & sake educator, writer and consultant. She holds a WSET Level 4 Diploma and has over 15 years’ experience in specialist wine teaching for luxury hotels, casinos, airlines and wine traders. She has a strong network of high-end consumers, government officials, media and trade in Asia. She is also a WSET certified educator training programme assessor in Asia.
Corinne was raised in Australia and lived there for more than 10 years. She has regularly cooperated with Wine Australia to promote Australian wine in Asia over the years. She has also been utilising Wine Australia’s Australian Wine Discovered education program to teach across Asia.
Corinne has appeared as guest wine and sake expert on television and radio programmes in Hong Kong and China. She is also a regular contributor for publications across Asia including Cathay Pacific’s inflight magazine and the largest state-owned wine magazine in China.
Corinne has been appointed as a judge in many wine and sake international competitions in Australia, Europe, China and Hong Kong. Corinne also gained valuable winemaking experience by working at the world-famous Henschke winery in Eden Valley, Australia.
Mark Tanner
Mark Tanner is founder and managing director of China Skinny. He has provided China market growth strategies and research to over 200 brands including Nike, Tourism Australia, Colgate, Reckitt Benckiser, IKEA, Woolworths, Coles, SAIC Motors, IHG and a host of Australasian food and wine brands. His views on China have been quoted in more than 200 international media outlets including Bloomberg, Reuters, FT, WSJ, AFR, The Australian and Forbes, where he is a columnist.
Tanner authors the most-read newsletter about marketing to China, and is a regular keynote speaker addressing audiences about Chinese marketing around the globe. Prior to moving to China, Mark rode his bike across Canada solo in the middle of winter, hunted for ancient Viking treasure in Iceland and led the first unbroken journey from the source of the Blue Nile to the sea.
Fongyee Walker MW
Fongyee Walker MW (Master of Wine) is the cofounder, with Edward Ragg, of Dragon Phoenix Wine Consulting, Beijing’s first and fully independent wine consulting and education service (est. 2007), and also the only provider teaching the full WSET Level 4 Diploma. She is one of mainland China’s most qualified wine educators, having passed her Master of Wine (MW) examinations on top of years of experience as a teacher in a variety of areas.
Fongyee has also delivered special trade-targeted wine courses in Mandarin for bodies such as Wine Australia, the Hawke’s Bay Wine Association, the Napa Valley Vintners and numerous other groups.
As a wine judge, Fongyee has judged at numerous wine competitions, such as the International Wine Challenge (UK), the Hong Kong International Wines and Spirits Competition, Royal Melbourne Wine Show, Old Mutual Trophy (South Africa) Wine Show, the Qantas Western Australia Wine Show, the Hunter Valley Wine Show as well as many other regional wine shows.
Fongyee is currently a columnist for Decanter Magazine, but has also written for Wine Review, RVF China and Wine in China among others. Fongyee is also the star of Wok ’n Wine, a popular internet-broadcast show about Chinese cuisines and wine matching, which has more than 4 million viewers.
