Oral and poster presentation at IVAS 2015 (Trento, Italy)

Abstract

The InVino 2015 symposium was held in the town of Mezzocorona in Italy, from the 14th to 17th of July. The symposium was attended by approximately 250 participants from different research groups from around the world and covered the following topics: • Chemical analysis and composition of grapes, wines and spirits (2 sessions) • Chemical and biochemical reactions • Metabolomics, Chemometrics and Authenticity of products • Sensory analysis The travel grant allowed Joanna Gambetta to attend the InVino 2015 symposium and deliver an oral presentation titled “Creation of a wine quality prediction index; Correlation of aroma precursors developed in Chardonnay (Vitis vinifera L.) berries during ripening with final wine quality” as well as the poster titled “Prediction of phenolic composition of Shiraz wines using attenuated total reflectance mid-infrared (ATR-MIR) spectroscopy”. Conference attendance also provided the opportunity to gain new knowledge on the latest advances in wine analytical science and the current topics being researched across the world, as well as the chance to network with established researchers of the field.

Summary

The 9th InVino conference was held from the 14th to 17th of July 2015, in Mezzocorona, Italy. The award of this travel grant allowed Joanna Gambetta, PhD candidate at the University of Adelaide, to participate in the symposium via an oral presentation titled Creation of a wine quality prediction index; Correlation of aroma precursors developed in Chardonnay (Vitis vinifera L.) berries during ripening with final wine quality and present the poster titled Prediction of phenolic composition of Shiraz wines using attenuated total reflectance mid-infrared (ATR-MIR) spectroscopy. Over the course of the symposium there were seven keynote presentations on several themes concerning the speakers’ ongoing research, interspersed by a total of 30 oral presentations. There were also 203 posters presented. An overview on grape and wine metabolomics was attained through a workshop organised by the Fondazione Edmund Mach. Attendance at the symposium provided a valuable opportunity to make new contacts with researchers from institutions throughout the world which may lead to collaborations on current and future projects. The travel also included a visit to the Laimburg research centre for agriculture and forestry, and the Cantine Ferrari winery.
