Aussie Wine Group MOG removal unit

What does the Aussie Wine Group removal unit do?

Grape harvesting mechanisation is a fast and efficient way of harvesting grapes, however non-selective harvesters also collect MOG (matter other than grapes) within harvesting bins.

Aussie Wine Group’s MOG-removal units are a bolt-on system for existing harvesters that remove most of the MOG from picks, helping to deliver clean fruit to the winery.

There are three distinct advantages in delivering MOG-free picks: wine quality and stylistic uplift, reduced costs in transporting MOG to and from the winery, and winery throughput optimisation.

How does it work?

Aussie Wine Group’s MOG-removal units are stand-alone systems that can be deployed on harvest bin trailers, or retrospectively installed onto the boom arm of harvesters. Both types of installation allow growers to use existing harvesters, but gain the benefits of clean, MOG-free picks. Importantly this technology is an affordable alternative to on-board selective harvesters.

During trials, producers were able to measure the tangible benefits of MOG removal, such as increased throughput through the winery processing systems. Winemakers were especially pleased with the delivery of unmacerated and MOG free fruit picks, enabling greater wine quality outcomes.

Trial and practice

Article: MOG free fruit at the winery a step closer

Report:

The trial of six MOG removal units captured metrics from harvesting equipment and crew. The units consistently delivered fruit picks with a MOG percentage of 0.2 per cent. The Australian wine sector standard rates MOG on a scale of 0–5, where a zero rating is applied to completely clear fruit, while a MOG rating of three or more is rejectable by the winery. A MOG percentage of less than 1 per cent equates to a zero MOG rating, which is most desired by many wine makers.

Key findings of the trial included:

  • Operators of the system reported that the infield sorters were easy to set up and operate, and were reliable.
  • Wineries were able to reduce their throughput time by up to 40 per cent as a result of receiving zero MOG samples from the sorters.
  • In one comparison, grapes only had a 30-minute exposure to MOG. This lack of exposure had a positive impact on colour and flavours of the wine.
