There are 32 teams competing in the World Cup 2018. This week’s market bulletin provides an overview of where each country ranks in still wine consumption.
A wine rankings table is shown below for each country in their World Cup grouping, showing total still wine sales and per capita consumption of still wine in 2017 as well as growth in both measures in 2017.
The 32 countries competing consumed 1.2 billion cases of wine in 2017, accounting for half the world’s still wine consumption. However, one of the world’s biggest still wine consumers, Italy, did not qualify for the World Cup, nor did the world’s largest wine market the United States of America.

Group C, which features France and Australia, is the biggest still wine consuming group with a combined total of 325 million 9 litre cases. In second place comes Group F, featuring Germany and Sweden with 255 million cases. The smallest still wine consuming group is Group H, featuring Japan and Poland with 49 million cases consumed.
Among the World Cup competitors, France is the biggest still wine market ahead of fierce on-field rival Germany. Australia makes the top ten, ranked seventh.
In terms of still wine per capita consumption, Portugal tops the list with 38.6 litres in 2017 and consumption is on the rise, showing perhaps that the Portuguese like to celebrate Ronaldo’s on-field feats with a glass of wine. The French take second spot with 33.5 litres per capita, but consumption is falling. Australia once again makes the top ten, ranked sixth with 20.6 litres per capita.
The fastest growing still wine market among the World Cup competitors is Egypt, which grew 33 per cent in 2017, albeit off a very small base. Runner-up in the growth stakes is Morocco with growth of 19 per cent and off a bigger base than Egypt. Reflecting the maturity of the market, Australia was ranked 17th in market growth.
The fastest declining market was Saudi Arabia, down 8 per cent off a very small base. Belgium took second-spot with a decline of 3 per cent.
Let’s hope Australia makes it through to the next round, so we can all celebrate with a fine glass of Australian wine.
