Wine trade registrations now open for One Day Wine School

22 Feb 2016

Wine Australia’s popular One Day Wine School returns for the fourth year in March and April to provide Australian sommeliers and trade with a deeper understanding of Australian wine’s history and evolution, its regions and current trends.

One Day Wine School is ideal for wine professionals who have a sound foundation of the basics and are looking to learn more about the history, evolution and revolution of Australian wine, its regions and its unique terroirs.
Hosted by wine educator Aaron Brasher, the day will include a structured exploration of the climate, micro-climate and geology of the regions, wine production, and the current state of the sector. There will be more than 20 wines featured in themed tastings, and a guest presenter alongside Aaron who will help lead lively discussion on Australian wines. Past guest presenters have included Kim Bickley (Fine Wine Partners), Tom Hogan (Harry & Frankie) and Philip Rich (Prince Wine Store).

At the end of the day, participants can opt to do a multiple choice exam and a blind tasting of one masked wine to test their new-found knowledge. The top seven participants from all sessions combined will win a place on the Wine Australia Trade Immersion Program (TIP) trip, travelling for eight days through wine regions Langhorne Creek, Mount Benson, Coonawarra, King Valley and Yarra Valley. The TIP trip will be held from 14 to 21 June 2016.

Wine Australia’s General Manager of Marketing Stuart Barclay says the education initiative is a vital way of ensuring local trade continue their Australian wine journey.

‘Australian wine quality is exceptional and we have a diverse offering, so our biggest challenge is to bring this richness of styles to people’s attention. We have 65 wine regions and each region has its own unique terroir, wine style and character.

‘We need to keep telling the regional stories of the fine wines being made in their own backyard, and help educate Australian wine trade on our history, the evolution of traditional varieties, and the innovations in our winemaking techniques,’ he said.

Past visitors and regional hosts have said of the TIP trip:

‘Thank you so much for such a wonderful opportunity to meet many vignerons and winemakers and to spend time in several regions that I haven’t had a lot of dealings with in the past. I’m keen to support these regions and brands where I can in the coming months.’ Sarah Andrews – Educator and Wine Consultant, Selador Wines.
‘I will be pushing Australian wines in our restaurant to all guests, especially our international clientele. I am proud of our wines and would like the industry to prosper.’ Michael Phipps – Sommelier, Bennelong

‘The opportunity to make personal connections with potential trade partners in the Riverina was invaluable. The educated visitors were enthusiastic and keen to hear from our region’s leaders and experience all that the Riverina has to offer.’ Kristy Bartrop – Industry Development Officer, Riverina Wine Grapes Marketing Board
